人生如走路,难行也要行
在吴承澔人生最低潮的时候,有过一段鲜为人知的“走路”领悟。
那一天清晨,他如往常般在巴士候车亭等着合伙人,要一起搭巴士到苏丹依斯迈路的办公室上班。久不见人影,他便打了一通电话给合伙人。
“没想到他竟然还在睡觉,还说去到公司都没有生意可做,去来干嘛?”
他当下一肚子火,挂了电话便一直往前走,就这样从八打灵高原走到了苏丹依斯迈路,全程接近4个小时。
“我满肚子委屈,边走边气自己。为什么我人生这条路这么难走?为什么我要这样作践自己,留在柔佛的安乐窝,或是如其他朋友般到新加坡赚外汇,岂不更好?”
从一路钻牛角尖,到距离目的地越近,他越通透豁达,吴承澔坚信自己所选择的这条路无论多么地难走、多么地曲折,只要肯一直走下去,一定会抵达目的地。
“就算不成功,我至少今日也可以说,我走过这条路。路再难走,我始终都要走下去。”
Keep walking no matter how hard it is A long distant, torturous, bitter walking experience made Dr. Edmund Goh suddenly realized with a blinding flash what life was all about. Like a roller coaster ride except so far there were more downs than ups!
One morning as usual he waited for his partner at the bus stop to take a bus to their office at Jalan Sultan lsmail. After a long time he called his partner who was still sleeping at home!
Recalls Dr Goh in exasperation, “I can still remember how I was so annoyed and frustrated when he said there was no point going to the office because there was no business at all!”
He was so upset he practically went crazy and in a daze, kept walking from Desa Petaling until he reached his office on Jalan Sultan Ismail almost 4 hours later!
“I was so grief-stricken and felt so sorry for myself. I moaned why my life was so hard and miserable? Why didn’t I just stay in hometown with my family in Johore or work in Singapore for a better income and stable life? Why did I keep asking for trouble? A lot of question marks floated in my mind.”
He saw he was coming to a dead end but he became more convinced of his capabilities. Dr. Edmund Goh began to believe although the road was long and rocky, with determination and commitment he would definitely reach the destination.
“It took years but in the end I made it so now I can say with pride it was a long struggle but success came to those who deserved it.”
夕阳之歌,万念俱灰
2010年,吴承澔在另一名商家注资下东山再起,重操旧业,经营一间验血实验室。
也许,上天认为他有能力承受更大的考验;这次,给他一个双重打击的失败,而这一记连环拳,几乎让他一蹶不振,倒地不起。
“公司开了不到9个月,股东突然撤资,还提走公司户头所有的钱,消失无踪;同一个星期,一名顾客也拿了货赖账,不知所终(据了解,这名顾客目前还成为了某杰青了呢!)。”
公司户头存款是零,让吴承澔真正感受到何谓一无所有。债台高筑,债主甚至委派收账员到柔佛老家讨债。
“收账员几乎搞到我家里鸡犬不宁。我的家是一个很传统、很典型的华人家庭,父母都寄望孩子成才,但我却做生意失败,讨债还讨上门,让两老颜面无光,只差没有家门不幸。”
父亲患原本身体就已欠佳,加上邻里的闲言闲语,让父亲更添郁闷;姐姐也责怪他让爸爸动气。唯独母亲始终不曾责怪过他,反而告诉他:“撑不过就回家,家门永远为我而开。”
人走到穷途末路,负面想法便会涌上心头。一天凌晨2时,在居住的大城堡(Seri Petaling)公寓10楼单位,吴承澔因债务缠身,连续多日的失眠。
“我睡不着,上Youtube瞎看,点到梅艳芳的《夕阳之歌》,恰好又是她最后一场演唱会,顿时间感到万念俱灰,犹如走到了人生的尽头。”
这时,他走出阳台,就要往下跳,幸好从槟城来寄宿在他家的朋友上厕所见状,及时拉着他,他才回神,随即嚎啕大哭。
“当时有一个想法是我不想拖累父母,更不想让他们继续被人指指点点。我这一跳,不但可以解决债务问题,保险赔偿也足够让父母过好下半辈子。”
Was utterly disheartened but never gave up the dream
Down but not out, Dr Edmund Goh staged a comeback in 2010 with another investor and started a blood test laboratory.
In hindsight it was the worst possible venture and coupled with bad luck and wrong timing, the business collapsed and almost caused him his life!
“The business operated for only 9 months and my shareholder withdrew all the cash in the company and just disappeared. In the same week, a customer defaulted on a debt, making the situation worse. Ironically this debtor was later awarded The Outstanding Youth by an organization!” sighs Dr Goh.
With zero deposit in the bank account, Dr. Edmund Goh was penniless. He was so deep in debt, creditors even went to his hometown Johore Baru to collect debts from his family.
“As I said before, mine is a very traditional Chinese family. My parents expected their children to be successful so we could maintain ourselves and our family. In fact my mother and father just wanted me to lead a nice, simple, normal life with no great expectations like most people. Yet my business failed and to add insult to injury, the creditors were trying to collect debts from parents. I never felt so embarrassed and humiliated in my life as I begged my parents to forgive me.”
Dr Goh was a disgrace to his family as far as he was concerned. His father, whose health was poor, fell into depression while his sisters berated him which was understandable. Only his mother never blamed him and urged him to return home if he could not take it anymore.
Dr. Edmund Goh felt this was the end of his road. At that time, he was staying on the 10th floor of a condominium in Sri Petaling. One night at 2 am, he was unable to sleep as he felt his mounting debts were crushing him and he could not see the light at the end of his tunnel.
“I couldn’t sleep and kept browsing online to watch YouTube videos. When I clicked onto Anita Mui’s Song of Sunset video, I promptly felt so utterly disheartened, like it was time to end my life.”
He felt like he was in a nightmare and could not wake. As if in a trance, he walked to the balcony and slowly climbed over the railing. Yes, he was going to commit suicide by falling 10 floors!
“At that moment all I could think of was that I did not want to drag my family’s name through the mud or be a burden to my family. If I was gone, not only would I settle all my debts but the insurance compensation would be more than enough for the rest of the lives of my parents.”
Miraculously his housemate Dean just happened to wake to go to the toilet. As he crossed the living room, he saw Dr Goh climbing over the railing and quick as a flash, he ran outside and pulled him back.
At that instant, Dr Goh came to his senses, saw what he nearly did and burst into tears. He never cried so much in his young life and he was only 25. And he prayed he would never have to cry so much again.
It was a cathartic moment. He realised he was given another chance by the gods and he vowed to make full use of this new lease of life.
绝处逢生,否极泰来
贵人相助,华丽转身
差点走过鬼门关,吴承澔犹如浴火重生,决定离开大马,到泰国寻找东山再起,卷土重来的新契机。
“我发誓下一次回国,一定要让父母颜面失而复得,成为人人称羡的父母。”
泰国一名顾客得悉吴承澔到泰国发展后,邀请他成为公司的顾问,主要负责撰写保健品研制配方,让他开始接触到生产领域,走向代工厂之路。
经历过彻底的失败,吴承澔变得更内敛,待人处事也更圆滑务实。不管订单大小,他一律承接,以赚取佣金的方式,一点一滴为自己累积重新爬起的资本。
“不久后,我认识到一名志同道合的朋友。我们合股成立了一间小工厂,正式开始代工生产保健品和药品;没想到初试啼声,生意很好,规模日益壮大。”
2012年,吴承澔离开马来西亚到泰国,在短短两年内,他人生便出现转机。
“‘否极泰来’这句成语,对我而言,格外有意思。这一趟泰国之行,可以说是让我重生。”
Chapter 3: After The Storm
Glorious turnarund
A brush with death brought a rebirth to Dr. Edmund Goh. He decided to leave Malaysia and seek an opportunity in Thailand.
He swore he would never return to Malaysia without success. He became a consultant of his customer’s company in charge of formulation of health supplements.
This opportunity opened his eyes to production lines and OEM of healthcare products.
After the near fatal storm, Dr. Edmund Goh became humble and steadfast. Gone were his cockiness and over confidence. No matter how big or small the purchase orders were, he accepted all and was willing to start from teh bottom of the ladder. Penny by penny (or should that be satang in Thai currency?) piled up and he accumulated his capital to stage a comeback.
“I met a friend and we pooled capital to set up a small factory. We started our business in OEM dietary supplements. We never thought the business would grow so fast and our factory kept expanding due to increased demand.”
It was a classic situation of finally being in the right place at the right time!
It was in 2012 when Dr. Edmund left his beloved Malaysia to start anew in Thailand. Within 2 years’ he was able to make a triumphant return.
“否极泰来” is a Chinese idiom which means from the depth of misfortune can come bliss and this idiom also brings a world of “泰”, which means “Thai” and is very meaningful to Dr. Edmund Goh.
That fateful sojourn to Thailand can be described as a rebirth for Dr. Edmund Goh as his ill luck seemed to ebb as he rose to be a nutrition star.
哪里跌倒,哪里爬起
在泰国找到创业的出口,吴承澔大可以债留大马不回国,但他并没有这么做。
“在哪里跌倒,就要从哪里爬起来。我2014年回国,偿还了大约400万令吉的债务;这是为自己,也为父母争回一口气。”
2018年,他在大马重新创业,耗资1500万令吉,成立寰禦科研控股集团(DEG)研究室。这也是该集团继泰国后,开设的第二间研究室。
DEG起步于泰国,核心业务为品牌代工生产,服务包括咨询顾问、产品注册、品牌开发、健康认证、国际贸易许可证申请等,旗下业务遍布大马、泰国、印尼、新加坡、中国、法国、美国、英国及迪拜等。
2014年,DEG开始进军中东市场,在迪拜开设分公司,以打造清真枢纽中心,分销全球。
最新发展的研究室是根据国际制药厂的标准作业流程(SOP)建设,重点放在清真领域,特别是瞄准中东市场,准备大展拳脚。
Pick yourself up from where you fell
In Thailand, his business was flourishing and all was hunky dory. In fact his life was so rosy and full of potential Dr. Edmund Goh could just remain in the Kingdom of Smiles permanently and not return to Malaysia to pay off his debts. But he did not. His sense of pride and personal honour would not allow him. He also missed his parents and sisters and wanted them to be finally proud of him.
“Pick yourself up from where you’ve fallen’, he quotes. “I came back to Malaysia and paid off around RM 4 million of debts. Doing this was not only for me but also for my parents.”
In 2018 Dr. Edmund Goh established his business in Malaysia with RM 15 million investment to set up DEG Laboratories Holdings Limited. This is his second laboratory of DEG Group after Thailand.
The core businesses of DEG include OEM, consultancy, product trademark, branding, health product certification, international trade certification and many more. The group businesses and customers now are all over the world, not only in Malaysia and Thailand, but also in Indonesia, Singapore, China, France, United States, Dubai and European countries.
In 2014 DEC spread its wings into the Middle East market with a branch in Dubai to build up a Halal hub for global distribution. The latest laboratory was built according to SOP of international pharmaceutical standards, targeting the Muslim Halal market particularly for Middle East markets.
不负众望,载誉而归
营养学界之星,要做世界第一
吴承澔对事业认真、对研发一丝不苟,对自己更是要求极高。他做事不只是要成功,还要做业界第一名。
这位营养学界之星重视品牌和声誉,他不负众望,获奖无数。他说,他不是追随者,也不当盲目的模仿者,而是创造者。

另外,英国政商大奖更委任他为评审团成员,以及伦敦企业管理大学特邀他成为客座教授,协助该大学审核企业管理硕士课程(MBA)。

Dr. Edmund Goh is a self-disciplined and dynamic entrepreneuras he strives to be the best. What he aims to achieve is not only success but be a trail blazer and No.1 in the industry.
Branding and reputation mean very much to this rising star of nutrition. As if proof is needed, he has received over 65 local, regional and international awards. He declares, “I don’t want to be a follower nor imitator as I was born to be a creator. My entire life is unique and my career is unprecedented.”
